So Ann Arbor News is taking the plunge and going online full-time as annarbornews.com. No more black smudges on your fingers or classifieds to serve as your puppy's pee territory. I found out about this while surfing online...naturally.
I've been working in advertising and marketing for the last 10 years. When I started my career back in 1999 - I was working in recruitment advertising which historically relied upon newspapers. But Monster.com and CareerBuilder.com were having a field day scooping up market share from all printed publications. And my colleagues and I knew that newspapers were on their way out anyway because none of us under 30 even read the paper. Who needed it with daily updates from Yahoo or our local OrlandoSentinel.com? It just seemed preposterous to think that 20 years from now we would be sitting at the kitchen table reading through the paper with our morning coffee like our parents have.
The writing is on the wall and has been for some time. Due to their predominately college town demographics, the printed Ann Arbor News was one of the first casualties but I sense the full move to online is coming for all papers. And I'm all for saving the trees.
